Of course, here in Britain, we call line standing, queuing, and we are all past masters at it. I don’t think I can be 100% British because one of my pet hates queuing. I am more likely to employ a line stander than to become one.

You probably are not going to approve of this, but I have queue-jumped quite brilliantly on occasion. I was once at an Ed Sheeran concert. The line stretched back for miles, and I gazed at it in despair. I have no patience whatsoever for standing around waiting. I went and sat on the grass with my friend to observe the queue for a while. Then a gap formed in the queue, and I spotted a small group of people heading towards it to cut through to the next line (there were several, all just as long). “Quick,” I said to my friend, “join that group; when they reach the gap, stop.” This is exactly what we did. The group carried on, and we stayed put, thereby cutting out about a mile worth of queue.

Nobody noticed (luckily enough).

Of course, my tactic could have gone horribly wrong, and I wouldn’t suggest it to anyone else, but for us, it worked. I like to call…
