The Remarkable Thing That Happened When We Gave Up Sugar for a Year.
I am sure you know this, but refraining from eating white refined sugar is one of the best things you can do for your health.
The truth is, I didn’t give up eating sugar for my own health. I did it to support my mum, who suffered from diabetes.
The doctor told her that it was possible to reverse diabetes if she adjusted her diet, so she decided to give it a go.
We cut out cakes, biscuits, sweets, ice cream, jam — all of the sweet treats.
This was quite an undertaking given my mum’s extreme sweet tooth, but her determination to stop taking medication to regulate her blood sugars outweighed her desire for sugary snacks.
The one and only treat we allowed ourselves was a mint chocolate with coffee when we went out for lunch.
The challenge is to eliminate it entirely. My mum lived on her own and relied on ready meals, which come with their own dose of sugar. Of course, bread is also known for its sugar content.
Commercial white bread has 1–2 grams of sugar per slice. Typically, my mum’s favourite bread was commercial. It is softer and cheaper for older teeth and gums than the sourdough I preferred.
