The People Who Cannot Recognise Faces.

It’s hard to imagine, but there are those that will not recognise you however many times you’ve met them.

Stephen Fry is one of my favourite celebrities of all time. I’ve never had the opportunity to meet him, even though he grew up in the county in which I live and went to university in the city where I grew up.

I once saw him in a Cambridge street, and I always hoped he’d visit the bookshop where I worked, but he never did.

I have had the privilege of meeting his cousin, and my friend, who previously resided at a National Trust property, had the excellent fortune to meet him there. Everyone says what a friendly and wonderful man he is.

Maybe one day I will get to meet him.

But even if I do meet him and then meet him a short time later, he won’t remember my face.

It won’t be simply because I am a nobody. He suffers from a rare condition known as prosopagnosia, which prevents him from recognising faces.

I recently heard Stephen interviewed on a podcast, and he explained how it makes him feel — sometimes embarrassed.
