Here are five quick tips to give you confidence.
- Always carry a camera with you. It is easier now than ever before. It’s not like you have to hump around a big Box Brownie. You can shoot street photographs on anything from your smartphone to a compact camera to a DSLR. Keep the camera in your hand, you need to be ever ready.
- Cameras are everywhere these days, so you shouldn’t feel too conspicuous. Having said that, a DSLR marks you out far more than a compact or smartphone. Act like a tourist, and people will accept you being present with a camera. It won’t feel as threatening to them. Pretend you are more interested in the building or street in front of you than the people.
- Avoid eye contact. Act like a cat. Pretend you are disinterested. Stay cool, and people are less likely to react to you taking pictures.
- If you are in a public place (in the UK, please check the local laws around street photography in other countries, as they do differ), you have every right to take photographs of people. Street photography isn’t about asking permission. You want your photos to be candid…
