Chicago Lights — Photo by the author.
  1. Light Painting.

Long exposure times in the dark with moving light sources enable the creation of light paintings.

You can create the light effects yourself using a flashlight or LEDs, or you can look for lights that are moving, such as fireworks.

Or, using static lights, you could move the camera around, as I did in the image above.

Long exposure means leaving the camera shutter open for a longer period of time to shoot a scene.

The most interesting thing, for me, about this light painting image is that it was shot from aboard a pleasure cruiser on Lake Michigan, looking at the night lights of Chicago. I shot it approximately 20 years ago.

I do love staring at the patterns the lights make.

2. Underwater photography

Time to put your snorkel on and get those flippers out. Not that I ever have!

But I should, because we have an amazing chalk reef here in Norfolk that I need to explore.
