Photographers that hook me — David Yarrow
It took me a while to remember how I first discovered David Yarrow. I feel like I have been a fan forever, but in truth, I only found him a few years ago. Browsing through YouTube for inspiration, I spotted an incredible video of his work with wildlife.
David Yarrow doesn’t like being described as a wildlife photographer. If you are a photographer with multiple disciplines, I totally understand that. I also flit between genres and have no wish to be pigeon-holed, either with my photography or my writing.
I’ve never much been into wildlife photography, either to view or take photos myself, but this video really captured my interest. David Yarrow is one of those people who looks pretty ordinary while being truly extraordinary. The man has no fear! He’s wary of hippos and, like me, not keen at all on crocodiles, but does that stop him from getting the shots? Oh no, of course not! This is the man whose own image is reflected in the eyes of a polar bear. You don’t get more up-close and personal than that!
Having said that I am not all that interested in photographing wildlife, I have always had a desire to photograph brown bears. David Yarrow gives me bear envy. The detail in his shots is superb. I would say it probably helps that Nikon give him top of the range cameras to use, but the truth is, no matter the equipment, it’s…
