What do most people listen to when they are in their car? Your immediate answer might be music, of course, but many like to listen to short stories. For those with a longer commute, listening to a good story can make the journey go quicker.

When I used to spend more time in the car, I realised (from phone calls) just how varied the places are where people listen to the radio. Everywhere from hairdressing salons to the factory floor, painters and decorators, gardeners, bakers, butchers, shops of many kinds, administrators, chauffeurs, plumbers, kitchen fitters, electricians, and odd-jobbers — to name but a few.

People love to listen to music, but they also love to listen to an entertaining story.

We grow up being told stories. As much as I loved reading, I enjoyed it even more when someone told me a story. It presented the opportunity to make the characters really come alive. When I used to tell stories to my nieces and nephews, they loved it when I embellished stories using my own unique brand of humour and funny voices.

Storytelling is almost as old as humanity itself; reading a book is wonderful, but there is nothing like someone with a character telling a great tale in their own unique voice.
