Young Gull photo by Petra Kidd.

This young gull has been hanging around with the pigeons down by the river. I noticed he hadn’t moved from the same spot for a couple of days. I couldn’t get too near to him without him being spooked, but when I zoomed in with my phone camera, I saw how bent his beak is.

Luckily, I have the number of a local wildlife rescue man, and he has promised to look for this young gull in the morning to see if he can help.

In my seagull storybook series, one of the gulls named Slowfly has a bent beak. It affects his flight speed.

Another, named Dropper, is always dropping his food. This means the other gulls are always grabbing what he drops, so he often hangs out with pigeons as they share their food with him.

This young gull with his bent beak reminded me of my two characters. I haven’t seen him fly, so maybe he can’t.

Life is tough out there for these birds.

Hopefully young Dropper/Slowfly will be rescued tomorrow.
