I once went through a particularly traumatic experience and I dealt with the thoughts of it by switching my mind to thoughts of my favourite dancers on a TV show. Every time the bad memory popped up, I switched my mind like pressing a button on a TV remote. It worked brilliantly!
That may not be easy for everyone but it is always worth a try, counteract the negative with a thought of something you love, it really can work.
