Hi Iwan, I'm sorry I only just spotted your comment and question! I'm not sure which magazine you should submit to first. There are so many out there. All I can suggest is that you read a few of them to see which might fit your style/content.

As a beginner myself, I am still finding my way. Many years ago I wanted to write a newspaper column, so I emailed the editor of a big regional daily and he gave me a weekly column for 18 months. I loved it, and it gave me great experience in tailoring my word count and content to fit. The column sparked quite a bit of interest as I wrote incognito. The big thing I did do, and I would suggest this to anyone, is that I asked to be paid for that column, and the editor agreed. We are always seeing advice to put your work out there for free, but I don't agree it is always a good thing. It wasn't a lot of money, but it made me realize my writing was worth paying for, and it paid some bills!

Let me know how you get on with the magazines. I'm sure you will find a great fit. Don't worry if you get rejections (I'm sure you've read about how most writers get work rejected, it's a normal learning curve). My first story was rejected by People's Friend and I know why! They were super quick to respond, but it can take several weeks to hear so don't worry if you don't hear quickly.

Good luck with it all. I will continue to share tips as I find them.

All the best

Petra
